Engagement

After all these years together Elise and I are engaged! We had officially decided to get married a month or more ago but we’re still waiting on the jewelry to be ready for the real proposal. The process took a bit longer than either of us expected so I didn’t have any particular date or method in mind for the proposal. What ended up happening was my birthday and I decided to throw a wine tasting party with 6 of our friends. I knew in my hours of thought that this had to be the time to propose. I couldn’t come up with a better plan in the hours awake at night leading up to the event.

I bought many different wines spanning the whole gambit of styles. Whites, Reds, sparkling, natural, fortified all made appearances. People brought some dishes to share and I provided the main course. With each wine, we all wrote down a word or two describing what we thought of it. These notes were a nice memento from the party.

After dinner was over we were in the middle of the red wine tastings. Elise patted my pockets, clearly hoping to find something, which she did but played it off as if she was looking to change the music on my phone. I was at least half sure she knew what was in my pocket but let it go. A few minutes later, or maybe many minutes later, I announced to the group that we had some important news to share. “And it all begins with a question” I said. That was the moment when I proposed to Elise.

She was very happy and uttered a teary “Yes”. Just as I had hoped, our friends jumped into action and took some photos of the moment. I hadn’t told anyone in advance. Mostly because I didn’t want someone to accidentally spoil the moment or feel on edge during the party until the proposal happened. Everyone was just as surprised as Elise!

The party and the proposal were a huge success! We celebrated with the next wine on the list: Lambrusco, a sparkling red. I didn’t have champagne as part of the tasting but this was the next best option. A night to be remembered by all!
